“I Want to Divorce My Spouse Because He Hid His Nicotine Addiction.” (Marriage Unhindered)

Doug Hinderer kicks off his discussion by sharing a heart-wrenching story he found on an online advice board. A husband confessed that he’s been hiding his vaping addiction from his wife, despite promising her he’d quit. She’s caught him again and is now threatening divorce. The kicker? She’s more upset about the lying than the vaping itself. Here’s part of what he said:

“Marriage is a sacred undertaking. You don’t just throw it away because your husband is addicted to nicotine. Give me a break! What happened to that vow, translation, promise to God, to love in sickness and health? Well, addiction is a sickness. This woman doesn’t understand the sacrificial nature of love.” 💔

Doug is passionate about this! He argues that addiction is a sickness and a wife’s job is to be her husband’s safe harbor, not to bail at the first sign of trouble. He mentions a parallel with the beautiful Instagram post from U.S. surfer Carissa Moore, who found solace in her husband’s arms after a tough loss. Doug’s point? That’s how love should be—unconditional and unwavering.

“This is our job as spouses, to be the safe harbor. This wife needs to be the safe place for her husband to land when his addiction is rearing its ugly head.” 🌊

Doug doesn’t mince words. He questions why the husband felt the need to hide his addiction. Could it be because his wife isn’t supportive? Because she’s not a safe space? Doug believes so and calls for the wife to grow up and support her husband. He emphasizes that hiding something often comes from fear of being misunderstood, unsupported, or unforgiven.

“Here’s my message to this wife: Stop being so immature. Time to grow up, buttercup. Support your husband in his struggle to overcome this very powerful addiction. Learn how to love with the heart of a woman, not with the heart of a selfish child.” 🌸

So, there you have it. A passionate plea from Doug Hinderer to support and love unconditionally, especially when it gets tough. Join Doug every weekday at 5 p.m. CT on Marriage Unhindered for more insights, and, most importantly, hope for your marriage. 🙏❤️
