Holy oil holds a profound place in Catholic tradition, serving as a sacred element in various sacraments to bless, heal, ordain, baptize, and confirm. The Catholic Church employs holy oil as a tangible sign of God’s grace and presence in the lives of the faithful.
In the Catholic Church, three types of holy oils are used, each with specific purposes: the Oil of Catechumens, the Oil of the Sick, and the Holy Chrism. These oils are blessed annually by the bishop at the Chrism Mass during Holy Week, then distributed to parishes for sacramental use throughout the year. Each type of oil serves a unique role in nurturing and strengthening the spiritual lives of Catholics.
1. The Oil of Catechumens:
The Oil of Catechumens is primarily used on those preparing for Baptism. Catechumens (those preparing to be baptized) receive an anointing with this oil as a sign of strength and protection as they prepare to enter the Church. “Through this anointing they are strengthened by Christ to resist the power of Satan and reject evil in all its forms, as they prepare for the saving waters of Baptism.” (USCCB) By anointing catechumens with this oil, the Church prays for God’s grace to sustain them as they journey toward new life in Christ.
2. The Oil of the Sick:
The Oil of the Sick, used in the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, brings spiritual and physical comfort to those suffering from serious illness or injury. This sacrament, formerly known as Extreme Unction or “last rites,” is a means of healing, hope, and peace for the sick. Through the anointing, the Church entrusts the individual’s suffering to God, asking for the Holy Spirit’s presence and support. “This Oil of the Sick has been blessed by our Bishop for the healing of body, mind, and soul. May the sick, who are anointed with it, experience the compassion of Christ and his saving love.” (USCCB)
3. The Holy Chrism:
The Holy Chrism is the most prominent of the three oils, used in the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders. This oil is unique because it is not only blessed but also consecrated by the bishop. At Baptism, the Chrism marks one’s entry into the Christian community. In Confirmation, the anointing with Chrism seals the person with the Holy Spirit, empowering them to live out their faith boldly. And in Holy Orders, the bishop anoints the hands of a priest or the head of a bishop, setting them apart for ministry and service. The use of Holy Chrism in these sacraments marks a permanent spiritual change, indicating an individual’s call to a life consecrated to God.
Whether for blessing, healing, or consecration, holy oils remind us of God’s presence, strengthening and sanctifying their lives. Each anointing is a call to deeper faith, inviting the faithful to embrace God’s grace and live in the light of His love.
