Patrick Conley sits down with Fr. Bobby Blood to talk about how we’re the ones who make things complicated, not God.
Be sure to check out the full hour of conversation and insight.
The Heart of Simplicity ❤️
Fr. Bobby reminds us that simplicity is about removing the unnecessary clutter. Jesus praised people without duplicity: those who were the same inside and out. That’s the goal of our spiritual life too! Instead of piling on endless devotions, prayer routines, and spiritual checklists, we should focus on what God is actually inviting us into: a relationship with Him.
Why Do We Overcomplicate Our Faith?
Patrick and Fr. Bobby discuss why we fall into the trap of spiritual busyness:
🔹 We want measurable success. (“Give me a spiritual report card, please!”)
🔹 We compare ourselves to others. (“If that holy person prays 10 Rosaries a day, I must be slacking!”)
🔹 We think more = better.
Fr. Bobby points out that the Pharisee in Luke 18 did all the right things, but his heart was in the wrong place. When our faith becomes a résumé instead of a relationship, we’ve missed the point.
Signs You’re Overcomplicating Things 🚩
Fr. Bobby gives some practical wisdom on how to self-diagnose spiritual clutter:
✅ Are you doing things just because others are?
✅ Have your devotions become mechanical instead of life-giving?
If you answered yes, it might be time to simplify and focus on what actually draws you closer to Jesus.
So… How Do We Keep It Simple?
A caller, Jonathan, shares how his spiritual director told him to pick just two devotions and stick with them for six months. He said that the result was peace, clarity, and depth instead of an overwhelming stress. You don’t need a mile-long prayer routine, just a faithful one.
Final Thought: Simple ≠ Easy, But It’s Worth It
Simplicity in the spiritual life isn’t about doing less; it’s about doing what actually matters. Instead of striving for a spiritual trophy case, let’s focus on being present with God. Maybe that means sticking to one or two devotions. Maybe it means letting go of comparison. But one thing’s for sure: The holiest people aren’t necessarily the busiest ones; they’re the ones who love best. ❤️
So, what’s one thing you could simplify in your spiritual life today? 🤔
