“How Can I Be Patient in Prayer?” (The Inner Life with Patrick Conley)

🎙️ Hosted by: Patrick Conley | Guest: Fr. Sam Martin

Okay, real talk: If you’ve ever tried to become a saint by the end of the week (and failed miserably after snapping at someone in traffic 😅) … you’re in good company. This episode is for us, the not-so-patient disciples trying to get holy in a world where the Wi-Fi better not buffer for more than 2 seconds.

Let’s break this down, friend-to-friend 💬👇 Here’s the whole podcast episode, btw!

What Even Is Patience?

Fr. Sam kicks things off by saying patience is basically your will syncing up with God’s.

“Thy will be done”: not just something we say, but something we live.

He points out that God isn’t in a hurry (…ugh, why tho?), and that’s actually good for us. The spiritual life has no shortcuts. No holy SparkNotes. No “become-a-saint-in-7-days” program. 🕊️

This Truth Hit HARD:

Fr. Sam Martin says: “The spiritual life isn’t Faster-Higher-Stronger… It’s Slower-Lower-Weaker.” (Oof. That one stings, but in a good way.)

✝️ Real Patience Looks Like…

-Trusting God even when it feels like crickets in prayer 🦗

-Rejoicing in suffering

-Living by rhythms and routines that slowly chisel away our selfishness… think: monastic bells, quiet time, and… laundry. 🧺

📞 Mark from Wisconsin Called In:

“How do you know when to keep praying for something vs. when to move on?”

Fr. Sam’s answer? GOLD. It’s about peace… or the lack of it.

Try praying for it, then without it. Which one brings peace?

Fr. Martin gives a great analogy:

🪨 A Jagged Rock in the Ocean…

Prayer won’t change God… it changes us.

It’s like tossing a sharp rock in the ocean. Check back in 10 minutes? Still jagged.
Come back in 10 years? Smooth as silk.

✨ Your Takeaway To-Go Bag:

😅 Stop trying to microwave your holiness.

🙏 Don’t give up praying for the thing (especially your kids, your spouse, your healing).

🌸 Want to grow in patience? Spend time in silence, slow down, pray, keep the Sabbath holy.

Patience isn’t passive. It’s active surrender. And it’s the gritty glue of sainthood. So yeah, you’ll mess it up… but God’s not going anywhere. And that is what gives us hope.

🔥So, are you ready to slow down and let God catch up with you? Or are you still trying to beat Him to the finish line? 😅

Let’s keep praying, even when it’s quiet. Even when it hurts. Even when we’re not sure it’s working. Because it is. 💛
