Insights from Pope Leo XIV’s Address to the Media

In his first official address to the media as the new pontiff, Pope Leo XIV spoke to journalists gathered in the Audience Hall on Monday, May 12th, 2025. With warmth and humility, he opened with a touch of humor, expressing gratitude for their work during what he called “a time of grace for the Church.”

Referencing the Beatitudes, Pope Leo XIV emphasized the role of media as peacemakers, urging them to reject aggressive, divisive language and instead foster a culture of dialogue. “Peace begins with each one of us,” he said, urging journalists to “say no to the war of words and images” and to uphold truth with love and integrity.

He then made a direct appeal for the release of imprisoned journalists, drawing attention to those who risk their lives to report the truth. He called them courageous witnesses who defend dignity and justice, underscoring the Church’s commitment to protecting freedom of speech and the press.

Pope Leo XIV acknowledged the profound challenges facing media in today’s world, particularly in a digital landscape dominated by technology and artificial intelligence. He emphasized that communication must not only convey information but also cultivate a culture of dialogue and understanding. “Your service is crucial,” he said. “Communication is not just transmission of information; it is the creation of culture.”

He urged journalists to disarm communication of prejudice and resentment, calling for words that unite rather than divide. Echoing the message of Pope Francis, he stated, “Let us disarm words, and we will help to disarm the world.”

Addressing the ongoing conflicts and suffering reported daily in the media, Pope Leo XIV asked journalists to choose the path of peace in their reporting, reminding them that they stand at the forefront of the battle between division and unity.

“You are at the forefront of reporting on conflicts and aspirations for peace,” he said. “I ask you to choose consciously and courageously the path of communication in favour of peace.”

The new Holy Father concluded his address with a blessing, expressing his hopes for a new era of communication that fosters peace, truth, and unity across all media platforms.
