Pope Leo XIV Begins His Pontificate with a Pastoral and Marian Focus

Since his election, Pope Leo XIV has hit the ground running, setting a deeply pastoral and prayerful tone that has captivated both the faithful in St. Peter’s Square and people around the globe. On Morning Air, John Morales and Rome correspondent Ashley Noronha provided an update on his early actions as Pope.

Pope Leo XIV began his papacy with visits to two significant Marian sites: the Shrine of the Mother of Good Counsel, an ancient Marian shrine outside Rome, and St. Mary Major, where he prayed at Pope Francis’ tomb. His devotion to the Blessed Mother has been a central focus, and it was further emphasized during his first Regina Caeli in St. Peter’s Square, where he was met with thunderous applause and crowds chanting, “Viva il Papa!”

Ashley shared a memorable story about Pope Leo before he was elected. A friend of hers saw Cardinal Prevost struggling to hail a taxi in full regalia. He helped him find the taxi stand, only to realize later that it was the last time Pope Leo XIV would ride as a cardinal. This humble, everyday moment underscores the approachable, down-to-earth nature of the new Holy Father.

On Monday, Pope Leo XIV addressed journalists with a powerful appeal for truth and integrity in communication. He urged them to avoid the “war of words and images”, emphasizing that truthful, loving communication is essential. He also called for the release of imprisoned journalists, reminding the crowd that “only informed individuals can make free choices.”

Ashley described the Regina Caeli as a “love fest” in the square, with the Pope’s voice resonating through the air as the crowd joined in singing, then fell silent in awe. The timing was significant: it all occurred on Good Shepherd Sunday and the World Day of Prayer for Vocations, echoing Pope Leo’s call to be courageous and faithful, reminiscent of Pope John Paul II’s “Be not afraid.”

Pope Leo XIV’s new coat of arms is rich in symbolism, including the following elements:

  • A Lily (Fleur-de-lis): Represents both the Virgin Mary and the Holy Trinity.

  • Heart pierced by an arrow: Symbolizes the longing soul wounded by divine love, reflecting the teachings of St. Augustine.

  • A Book: Represents Sacred Scripture and Augustine’s profound wisdom.

This powerful imagery reveals a Pope who is deeply Marian, scripturally grounded, and prepared to shepherd the global Church with both heart and intellect.

As the world continues to get to know Pope Leo XIV, one thing is clear: he is a Pope of profound faith, a deep devotion to Mary, and a commitment to serving all people with humility and love. Let us keep him in our prayers as he embarks on this new chapter of leadership.
