Do you know what it feels like to be abandoned?
I bet you do! And I bet it’s not fun to think about.
All of us have felt abandoned before. Whether it’s as a child or an adult, feeling abandoned or betrayed is devastating. It can make us question everything. But God never abandons us. He never leaves our side. Jesus is there with us in the midst of our suffering.
Remember how St. Margaret Mary spent all those years ill? Forced to stay in bed for years? Her greatest comfort during that time was talking to the Lord. In the Third Promise of the Sacred Heart, Jesus promises us:
“I will comfort them in all their afflictions.”
When we grow close to the Sacred Heart, Jesus promises that He will be our comfort in all our suffering. We will never be alone!
After St. Margaret Mary returned home from the convent, her mother, Philiberte, fell ill with a terrible disease. Abandoned by her friends and family, Philiberte was left to die. But St. Margaret Mary cared for her mother and cleaned her wounds daily. She slept and ate very little during this whole period.
In the midst of this, St. Margaret Mary grew in her love of the Eucharist and in mental prayer. She was grateful that Jesus had given her this suffering so that she could become more like Him. Imagine that!
