Where do you go when life gets hard?
Often when life gets hard we turn for help to the wrong things: money, power, status, pleasure, food, or distraction. While an extra slice of cheesecake might help you feel better in the moment, it won’t help solve your problems!
When we are hurting, we need to go somewhere that can really help us. Whether a loved one has hurt us or we just lost our job, Jesus wants to be our refuge. He wants to be our ‘first choice’ when we encounter difficulty.
In the Fourth Promise of the Sacred Heart, Jesus says:
I will be their secure refuge during life, and above all, in death.
What does a ‘secure refuge’ mean? A ‘refuge’ is something that protects us from danger or distress. And if it’s secure, that means that it is reliable! You can trust a secure refuge to protect you from danger!
When we face suffering or difficulty, we can find safety in Jesus. We can bring Him our fears and worries and He will really help us! And the best thing? That’s not just during life on earth, but afterwards for forever in eternity!
Next time you face something difficult – someone hurting you or a moral decision – bring it to Jesus and His Sacred Heart! He promises to protect you and be with you in eternity!
