St. Ambrose: Patron of Beekeepers

For many thousands of years, honey has been used as a natural sweetener, medicine, as well as for many other less-obvious purposes. Its history dates back to prehistoric times and the ancient Egyptians were known to keep bees in order to harvest the sweet, sticky, golden stuff.

But did you know that there is actually a patron saint of bees and beekeepers? Let me tell you the story of St. Ambrose of Milan.

340 AD: Patron Saint of Beekeepers |

Saint Ambrose lived in Italy during the fourth century. As the legend goes, when the infant Ambrose was asleep in his cradle, a swarm of bees came to cover his face, even crawling into his open mouth. Now, I can tell you that such a sight would certainly alarm any parent. But when the bees flew away, baby Ambrose was unharmed. Those who witnessed this incredible sight believed that it was a sign of his future life — that he would be blessed with eloquent and sweet speech.

Indeed, Ambrose had a way with words and a deep wisdom that served him well when he became governor and eventually served the Church as bishop of Milan. He was a gifted preacher and was known as the “honey-tongued doctor”.

Centuries after his death he was named one of the original four doctors of the church. He is also the patron saint of beekeepers and bees, and even candlemakers (beeswax candles, anyone?).

Now when you see an image of St. Ambrose holding a beehive, you’ll know why!
