Caring For Our Temples of the Holy Spirit

On her show, Timmerie recently spilled a fun and surprising detail: Pope Leo XIV has had a comprehensive workout routine for years. His trainer didn’t even know his joyful, humble client was a cardinal, let alone the future Pope!

And when Pope Leo stepped out on the loggia? One of Timmerie’s first comments on his appearance was about how fit he looked. Her husband agreed, adding that he looked healthy and his skin was glowing.

Using the Pope as a role model, Timmerie asked a question to her listeners:

Are you taking care of your body?

We’re comprised of body and soul, and our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. If the Vicar of Christ can make time to move, rest, and refuel, so can we.

Timmerie laid out 4 pillars of basic, human self-care, backed by science and grounded in stewardship.

1. Sleep

Target: 8 hours a night.
Your brain, hormones, and spiritual clarity depend on it.

2. Diet

Target: 1g of protein per 3lb of body weight, daily. If you’re trying to gain weight by building muscle, increase that to 1g per lb of body weight.
Protein is key. It curbs cravings, boosts energy, and keeps you strong.

3. Sunlight

Target: 15–30 mins daily.
Sunlight supports vitamin D, mood, and sleep cycles.
Working from home? Laptop on the patio = win.

4. Movement

Target: 30 mins, 3x/week.
Pope Leo exercised 2–3x per week before he wore white. If he can, so can we.

While having a gym is helpful, it’s not necessary to exercise. Walk. Dance. Lift that Amazon box you still haven’t opened. The key is to move.

“God created our bodies. He knows what they need. Let’s stop starving them of sleep, nutrition, light, and movement—and start treating them like the temples they are,” said Timmerie.

And next time you work out? Offer it up for the Pope. He’s probably doing the same.
