Pope Leo, Unity, and the Spirit of St. Augustine (Morning Air)

On Morning Air, John Morales sat down with Fr. Dominic Bouck for a super fascinating look at the Augustinian Order, and what it might mean for the Church now that we have the first-ever Augustinian Pope: Pope Leo XIV.

Fr. Dominic explained the roots and charism of the Augustinians, a smaller-but-mighty group of friars founded on the simple yet powerful Rule of St. Augustine. It’s all about common life, shared mission, and that famous phrase from the Acts of the Apostles: “one heart and one mind.” 💛🧠

That theme of unity, so core to Augustine’s vision, is already radiating from Pope Leo’s early words and actions. Fr. Bouck brought up how Pope Leo’s papal motto, inspired by Augustine’s love for Christ-centered community, is definitely making waves across the Church. Guess what? Even his inaugural homily opened with the timeless line: “Our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee, O Lord.” 💬🔥So good!

Fr. Dominic and John also touched on the huge ecumenical potential of having an Augustinian Pope, especially with shared admiration for Augustine among Lutherans and other Christians. Could this be a turning point for deeper unity in the Body of Christ? Let’s keep praying for this!

💭 “He’s not driving anyone away… he’s bringing everyone in.”

Fr. Bouck summed it up so well: Pope Leo is simple, Christ-centered, and already uniting the Church… not as a bureaucratic organization, but as the sacrament of salvation in the world.
