Disagreeing Agreeably (Morning Air)

On Morning Air, Glen Lewerenz sits down with Catholic wife, mom, and pro-life advocate Angela Erickson to explore something many Christians struggle with – how to talk to someone you disagree with. From politics to faith, Angela says the goal isn’t to “win” an argument, but to win a soul.

She calls this approach relational apologetics – sharing truth through authentic relationship rather than confrontation. Angela warns that in today’s culture of outrage and echo chambers, many have stopped asking questions and started treating conflict as entertainment. True evangelization, she says, begins when we see the other person not as an opponent, but as a child of God.

Angela reminds you that real persuasion happens in the context of trust – often with family and friends who know us best. “Our beliefs can change,” she says, “but the dignity of the person never does.” When disagreements arise, she urges Catholics to prioritize relationship over politics, to speak the truth in love, and to listen with humility.

She also reflects on her own experience on college campuses with Students for Life, remembering how measured, charitable dialogue often reached onlookers more effectively than heated debate. Sometimes, the one who listens calmly becomes the most persuasive voice in the room.

Both Glen and Angela note that our society rewards outrage – but Christians are called to something higher. “We aren’t made to live in echo chambers,” she explains. “When we stop engaging in good faith, we stop seeking truth.”

Her advice? Approach every disagreement as a disciple of Christ would – with compassion, courage, and a long view toward eternity. You’re talking to win a heart.
