This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine!
We all know the tune of this more than one-hundred-year-old children’s song. And you probably know the scripture its lyrics are based on. Matthew 5:14-16 says:
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.”
We all have a light within our souls, given by God. If we neglect it, that fire will fizzle and fade. But if we stoke the fire, it will grow, and spread, and become a source of warmth for us and others.
Saint Catherine of Siena famously said, ”If you are what you should be, you will set the world ablaze!” This is Christ’s call to us.
If you have woven a bushel basket of fear to cover your light, it’s time for those walls to come down. Don’t hide the source of your joy, hope, peace, and faith—the Light of the World who dwells in us. Christ, our Light, commanded us to go out to all the world and proclaim the Good News!
Or perhaps fear has never been your problem. Maybe you love to share the gospel, but you’ve forgotten who is meant to get the attention and glory. (Hint, it’s not you!) Pray for and cultivate the humility you need to do all things in His name, for His glory alone. Do good so that God is given glory through you.
In the words of the wise C.S. Lewis, “Don’t shine so others can see you. Shine so that through you, others can see Him.”
Hide it under a bushel? No! I’m gonna let it shine. Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
