Many Catholics have wondered why receiving the Precious Blood at Mass became less common after COVID and whether receiving only the Host means receiving “less” of Jesus. On The Patrick Madrid Show, Patrick Madrid put that misconception to rest.
Patrick explained that while practical health concerns led many parishes to stop offering the chalice, the Church has always taught that Jesus is fully present — Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity — under either form of the Eucharist. Whether you receive the consecrated Host or the Precious Blood, “you have received all of Jesus.”
He also pointed to an important lesson from Church history. Some early Christians mistakenly believed they needed to both consume the flesh and the blood to receive the fullness of Christ. The Church corrected that misunderstanding, affirming that Christ is entirely present in each form of Holy Communion. Belief contrary to this truth became known as Utraquism.
Patrick acknowledged that receiving under both kinds beautifully highlights the symbolism of the Last Supper, but emphasized that no grace is lacking when receiving only the Host.
The conversation served as a comforting reminder that the Eucharist is never incomplete. Every Communion is a complete encounter with Jesus Christ Himself.
