The Holy Father Honors Mothers, Encourages Unity, and Praises Charity in Regina Coeli Address

Pope Leo XIV marked Mother’s Day with a prayerful appeal for mothers across the world, placing them under the care of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Following the Regina Coeli in St. Peter’s Square, he invited the faithful to offer gratitude for the gift of motherhood while remembering in a special way those who face hardship.

Entrusting mothers to the intercession of Mary, the Holy Father emphasized the dignity and sacrifice inherent in their vocation. He drew attention to those living in difficult conditions, urging the Church to remain mindful of their struggles and to support them through prayer and charity. In honoring mothers, the Pope reaffirmed the Christian understanding of maternal love as a reflection of God’s own care for His people.

The Holy Father also observed the annual Day of Coptic-Catholic Friendship, marked each year on May 10. He extended fraternal greetings to Pope Tawadros II and to the faithful of the Coptic Orthodox Church, assuring them of his prayers. His message expressed a sincere desire for continued growth in friendship and unity, rooted in the shared call to follow Christ. This gesture reflects the Church’s ongoing commitment to strengthening bonds among Christians through dialogue and mutual respect.

Turning to current events, Pope Leo offered thanks for the people of the Canary Islands, praising their spirit of hospitality. He noted their willingness to welcome a cruise ship carrying passengers affected by illness, recognizing this act as a sign of compassion and solidarity. Such generosity, he suggested, stands as a witness to the Gospel in action.

Looking ahead, the Pope recalled his upcoming apostolic journey to Spain in June. During the visit, he will travel to Tenerife and Gran Canaria, where he plans to meet migrants and those who assist them. This visit highlights the Church’s continued mission to accompany the vulnerable and to uphold the dignity of every person.
