Pope Leo XIV has begun his summer stay at Castel Gandolfo, reviving a beloved papal tradition while continuing to carry out the responsibilities of his ministry. Although his schedule has slowed slightly, his time at the papal residence is focused not on vacation, but on prayer, study, recreation, and preparation for the busy months ahead.
Joining The Mark Swartzberg Show, Vatican correspondent Ashley Noronha explained that the Holy Father arrived at Castel Gandolfo on July 5 to an enthusiastic welcome from local residents. The town had not hosted a pope for an extended summer stay in more than a decade, making Pope Leo’s return especially meaningful for the community.
The cooler climate outside Rome provides an ideal setting for renewal. Pope Leo has spoken about the importance of setting aside time for prayer, reading, and healthy recreation. An avid tennis player, he is expected to continue enjoying the sport while balancing audiences and meetings throughout his stay. He will also return to Rome when needed before resuming his regular public schedule later this summer.
A Documentary Exploring the Pope’s Formation
A new documentary, Leo in Rome, also offers a closer look at the years that shaped Pope Leo before his election to the Chair of St. Peter.
Rather than presenting a simple biography, the film examines how his years in Rome formed him as a priest, canon lawyer, Augustinian religious, and Church leader. Ashley noted that Robert Prevost spent many years studying and serving in Rome, earning advanced degrees in canon law before being elected Prior General of the Augustinian Order. Those experiences gave him significant leadership responsibilities and helped prepare him for his later service as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops.
Those interviewed in the documentary consistently describe him as approachable, collaborative, and attentive to others. His years of service allowed him to develop a broad understanding of the universal Church while remaining grounded in the Augustinian spirituality that continues to shape his papacy.
Celebrating American Roots and a Universal Mission
The discussion also highlighted Pope Leo’s gratitude for his American heritage. During a recent private dinner with U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See Brian Birch and his family, held in honor of the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence, the Pope reflected on his American roots while emphasizing that his mission now extends to the entire universal Church.
The meeting also renewed discussion of an invitation for Pope Leo to visit the United States, an invitation he has received with gratitude and joy.
Praying for the Protection of Human Life
As Catholics accompany Pope Leo throughout the summer, the Holy Father has also entrusted the Church with a special prayer intention for July.
He asks the faithful throughout the world to pray for greater respect and protection of human life at every stage, recognizing every human person as a gift from God. It is a fitting reminder that even during seasons of rest, the Church remains united in prayer and in the mission of proclaiming the dignity of every human life.
