Advances in medicine can bring incredible hope, but not every breakthrough is a moral option. On Trending with Timmerie, Timmerie welcomed Father Nicanor Astriaco, O.P., a Dominican priest, molecular biologist, and bioethicist, to discuss the growing practice of womb transplants and what the Catholic Church teaches about this emerging technology.
Womb transplants are currently used for women born without a uterus, allowing them to carry a pregnancy through in vitro fertilization (IVF). While the procedure may seem compassionate on the surface, Father Astriaco explained that it carries serious ethical concerns for the recipient, the donor, and the unborn child.
At the heart of the discussion is the difference between two competing views of ethics. Modern secular medicine often emphasizes personal autonomy and freedom. Catholic bioethics, however, begins with the dignity of every human person and the principle to “first do no harm.”
“The fulfillment of her aspirations cannot trump the health risks to all involved,” Father Astriaco explained, noting that every womb transplant requires powerful immune-suppressing drugs and currently depends on IVF, which itself is immoral.
The conversation also explored the exploitation often tied to surrogacy, particularly in developing countries where poverty can pressure women into carrying children for wealthy couples. Father Astriaco warned that these arrangements can blur the line between consent and coercion, placing vulnerable women at greater risk of exploitation and even human trafficking.
As new reproductive technologies continue to develop, Timmerie reminded listeners that the question is never simply whether something is medically possible, but whether it truly respects the dignity of every human life involved.
The Church invites us to approach these difficult questions with both compassion and truth, recognizing that authentic medical care should always protect the health, dignity, and God-given value of every person.
