A Message of Hope

The year was 1952; it was a time period filled with anxiety and fear.  A society dealing with the aftermath and destruction of World War II and uncertainty as the tensions heightened during the Cold War. A bishop saw the need to evangelize to a culture that so desperately needed a message of hope.

Venerable Archbishop Fulton Sheen took to the airwaves preaching a dynamic weekly television show, Life is Worth Living. His unpaid, unscripted show quickly grew in popularity attracting viewers with the Gospel message. In just two years he won an Emmy Award for the Most Outstanding Television Personality reaching 30 million weekly viewers.

Life is Worth Living, was Venerable Archbishop Fulton Sheen’s message of hope. That despite struggles and crosses, anxieties and fear, when our life is centered on Christ it transforms. He preached on many of the same societal and cultural struggles we face today giving hope as people looked for answers and meaning. His timeless lectures addressed topics such as morality, faith, philosophy and current events.

While he was a famous media evangelist known for his award winning television and radio broadcasts he credits his entire ministry to time spent with our Lord in prayer. Venerable Archbishop Fulton Sheen was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Peoria, Illinois on September 20, 1919 and vowed from that day forward to pray for an hour every day in front of the Blessed Sacrament, this was the foundation of everything he did.

On September 24, 2026 in St. Louis, Missouri Venerable Archbishop Fulton Sheen will be beatified becoming a Blessed. The miracle leading to his beatification was one of great hope. Baby James Fulton was born with a knot in his umbilical cord; he had no heartbeat and was not breathing. His family and friends prayed asking for the intercession of Venerable Archbishop Fulton Sheen, after 61 minutes his heart miraculously started beating. Today, James is a 15 year old boy who has suffered no complications or neurological damage from the lack of oxygen for over an hour.
