Nobody likes thinking about death. But on Trending with Timmerie, Timmerie and Preston Allex, President of Catholic Legacy, explain why preparing for it can actually be an act of love for the people we leave behind.
Preston helped create Catholic Legacy, a free Relevant Radio resource designed to help Catholics make important decisions about their children, property, funeral, and medical care.
For parents, one of the biggest questions is guardianship. If both parents unexpectedly die, who will care for their children, and will those children continue to be raised in the Catholic Faith?
“Your notation of who you want to raise your children carries a lot of weight,” Preston explained. Catholic Legacy allows parents to document their wishes by naming guardians for minor children or for a child with special needs who may require lifelong care.
Timmerie shared that friends once asked whether they could name her and her husband in their will as guardians for their children. The request initially felt startling because of its seriousness. But those friends took their responsibility so seriously that they later showed Timmerie exactly where their will was stored in case something happened to them.
Catholic Legacy also addresses end-of-life medical decisions. Preston explained that its health care directive was designed to align with Catholic teaching while recognizing that good medical decisions are not simply about doing everything possible or refusing treatment altogether. Rather, Catholics should seek appropriate care while respecting the dignity of human life and accepting natural death.
Catholic Legacy provides templates that can help families document these wishes, though Preston recommends consulting a qualified attorney when possible and carefully following the requirements for properly executing legal documents.
Death may be uncomfortable to discuss, but preparation can spare loved ones confusion while making our deepest convictions clear.
