St. Thérèse of Lisieux famously promised to spend her Heaven doing good on earth and to “let fall from heaven a shower of roses.” On The Drew Mariani Show, Drew heard from listeners who believe they have experienced those roses in extraordinary ways.
Drew was careful to explain what Catholics actually believe about the intercession of saints. St. Thérèse does not possess supernatural power independent of God. Jesus Christ is the source of grace, and the saints, united with Him in Heaven, can intercede for us just as Christians pray for one another here on earth.
Rita from Hazel Green, Wisconsin, recalled selling Roses for Life on Mother’s Day when, unusually, one rose remained. She gave it to an older woman sitting in the back of church.
The woman began sobbing. Her daughter had been diagnosed with fast-spreading stage 4 cancer, and she had been praying a novena. “And now I got a rose,” she told Rita.
According to Rita, tests the following day came back clear.
Another caller, Patty, had discovered a lump in her breast shortly after her father unexpectedly died. While grieving and facing surgery, she prayed to St. Thérèse and received a dozen red roses the night before going to Mayo Clinic. Although Patty ultimately needed a mastectomy, she begged God for 20 more years to help her husband raise their children.
“It has been over 30,” she told Drew.
For Drew, these stories point beyond the roses themselves to trust in God.
“Turn to the intercession of saints, ask God for signs, trust in the Lord,” he encouraged listeners.
A rose may be small, but St. Thérèse built her spirituality around doing small things with great love. Sometimes, those little things can become powerful reminders that our prayers are heard.
