DREW: Do We Need an AI Slowdown?

Fresh AI concerns are sparking calls for more regulation. Recently on The Drew Mariani Show, Professor Joseph Vukov, Associate Professor of Philosophy at Loyola University in Chicago, covered the future of AI.

The proximate origins of the AI concerns came from Jacob Coxyn, a former researcher at the AI company Anthropic, who resigned his position and posted a lengthy thread on X, writing “The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade.” That sent shockwaves throughout the tech world, including calls for the US to pursue more regulatory action.

Another recent story also sparked alarm bells. During a closed test, OpenAI agents escaped and attacked the server of another AI company, Hugging Face. All of this happened without the knowledge of OpenAI testers, “until they figured out that their agents were on the loose and hacking others,” Vukov said. After the test, OpenAI said it was “an unprecedented cyber incident, involving state-of-the-art cyber capabilities.”

“I am more worried about some of the alarm bells that are ringing recently than I was even just a month or so ago,” Vukov told Drew Mariani. He is convinced that companies should pause AI development “to try and understand better these machines that we’re building,” he said.

Trump & AI

President Trump has responded to calls for AI regulation by calling them a “hoax.” Posting on Truth Social, the President said, “We will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry. Rather, we will cherish it, help it, and watch over it, as it grows!” Trump, did however, announce he will hire an AI “czar” — but was light on what the role entails.

Earlier this week the President grabbed headlines when he renamed AI as “super intelligence” in a speech to the UN. “The use of the word ‘artificial’ makes it sound fake,” the president said, “it’s actually amazing.” All official US documents will now refer to AI as super intelligence or SI.

Pope Leo

Pope Leo has continued to lead on the AI issue. The Holy Father recently sent a message to an AI symposium inviting participants “to examine ways in which artificial intelligence can contribute to peace when its development and use are guided by concern for the good of others,” according to Vatican News.
