The Church celebrates many feasts that recall important events in the life of Jesus. We have His birth, His Presentation in the Temple, His Baptism in the Jordan River, the Last Supper, and His Crucifixion and Resurection. But there is only one event between His Baptism and the Last Supper that we celebrate with a […]

There is a holy place in Israel that rises almost 1,800 feet above sea level. It’s called Mount Carmel, a Hebrew name that means “God’s Garden.” It was there that the Prophet Elijah confronted 450 prophets of the false god Baal; he convincingly demonstrated that there is no God except the True God (see 1 […]

The Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul

In some parts of the world the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul is a Holyday of Obligation. In fact, it was one in the United States until 1840. Though we are no longer obligated to go to Mass, this feast is so important that when it falls on a Sunday, it “bumps” the usual […]

From 1673 to 1675 Jesus appeared to a French nun, a member of the Visitation Order that was founded in 1610. We are concluding the 350th anniversary celebrations of those apparitions with the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, a feast that Jesus Himself requested. St. Margaret Mary, to whom Jesus appeared, said […]

Within a month of the feast of the Visitation (May 31), when we celebrate the Blessed Virgin Mary’s visit to her kinswoman Elizabeth who was pregnant with John the Baptist, we have a Solemnity celebrating his birth. He is one of only three people whose births are celebrated with a feast day. Why is that? […]

In the 13th Century a Norbertine nun named Juliana had a recurring dream in which a full moon appeared with a dark line on it. In time Jesus explained to her that the moon represented the Church with its liturgical calendar and the line represented a feast that was missing in the Church’s annual celebrations. […]

The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity

June 15, 2025June 6, 2025 Articles, Faith and Spirituality

Today we are celebrating a great mystery—the Most Holy Trinity. God is one and God is three. Tradition has it that St. Patrick tried to explain this mystery to people by showing them a shamrock, also known as a three-leaf clover. There they could see one clover that was also three. However, such attempts to […]

The Feast of Pentecost

Pentecost is a Greek word that refers to the fiftieth day. It was a festival that God told the Jewish People to celebrate fifty days after Passover when the first fruits of grain were harvested (Exodus 23: 16). Christians celebrate a new Pentecost fifty days after the new Passover, Jesus’s Resurrection. We have completed fifty […]

“Goodbye.” For those who love, “goodbye” might be the hardest word to say. We want to remain with the ones we love. Yet, forty days after His resurrection, Jesus said “goodbye” to the apostles, His Mother Mary, and us. He ascended to His Father in Heaven. At the Last Supper Jesus told the apostles that […]

On May 13, 1917, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to three children, ages seven to ten, near an out-of-the-way place in Portugal. She gave them an important message for the world. This is God’s usual way. He chooses the most unlikely people and places. In the prophet Isaiah we read: “For my thoughts are not […]

Since the late 1800’s, May 1 has been celebrated around the world as “International Workers’ Day.” Though it began as a day to honor workers and to advocate for an eight-hour workday, it quickly became a day to promote a socialist and communist agenda. By the end of World War II and the beginning of […]
