• Memorial of St. Martin of Tours, 316-397; forced to serve in the army at 15; became a Christian, was discharged, and became a disciple of Hilary of Poitiers; Martin established what may have been the first French monastery near Poitiers; he was reluctantly consecrated bishop of Tours; he rejected the principle of putting heretics to death; and at his own death, he prayed, “Lord, if your people still need me, I do not refuse the work. Your will be done.”
