- Optional Memorial of St. Augustine of Canterbury; set out in 596 to evangelize the Anglo-Saxons in England; built a church and monastery near the site of the present Canterbury Cathedral; adhered to missionary principles of purifying–rather than destroying–pagan temples, allowing pagan festivals to be transformed into Christian feasts, and retaining local customs as far as possible; known as the Apostle of England; died 605 A.D.
