- Commemoration of St. Stanislaus of Krakow, 1030-1079; after ordination, he was appointed preacher and archdeacon to the bishop of Krakow, and then became bishop of Krakow himself in 1072; during an expedition against the Grand Duchy of Kiev, Stanislaus became involved in the political situation of Poland; he attacked the evils of the peasantry and the king, especially the unjust wars and immoral acts of King Boleslaus II; the king repented, but reverted to his old ways; Stansislaus resumed his criticisms despite threats of treason and death; finally, he excommunicated the king, who ordered soldiers to kill the bishop; they refused, so the king killed Stanislaus with his own hands
