White Sox to Honor Pope Leo XIV

Morning Air listeners were treated to some true Chicago Catholic gold this week as John Morales and Glen Lewerenz shared some exciting news: On June 14th, the Chicago White Sox will honor Pope Leo XIV, a South Side native, Sox superfan, and the new shepherd of the Catholic Church.

Guaranteed Rate Field will be hosting a one-of-a-kind event that will include a Holy Mass on the field, live music, film features and in-person testimonies about Pope Leo’s life, and a special video message from Pope Leo himself—directly to the youth

This is more than just a game. It’s a moment of spiritual and civic pride for Chicago, and a chance for the world to see where it all began.

As John and Glen put it, the Sox are honoring one of their own. Pope Leo XIV—formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost, who grew up in Dolton, Illinois, just blocks from the ballpark.

No word yet on a ceremonial first pitch, but this celebration is already a historic first: a papal tribute with a local soul and global reach. The Pope’s message is set to be broadcast worldwide the next day.

Naturally, Glen couldn’t resist asking John if this event might finally turn him into a Sox fan. John, a lifelong Cubs devotee, diplomatically replied that he doesn’t root against the Sox, and he even attended the 2005 Sox Championship Parade, just in case the Cubs never made it. However, they won in 2016.

This June 14 celebration blends faith, fandom, and local pride like only Chicago can. Whether you’re there for the Mass, the music, or just a hot dog in Pope Leo’s honor, this event is shaping up to be unforgettable.

White Sox. Holy Mass. Papal message. South Side pride.
