- Optional Memorial of St. Augustine of Canterbury; in 596 he set out with his monks to evangelize the Anglo-Saxons of England; he heard stories of the ferocity of the Anglo-Saxons, and the stormy waters of the English Channel, but was reassured by Pope Gregory the Great; King Ethelebert set up a residence for them in Canterbury, and was himself baptized a year later; Augustine was consecrated a bishop in France, and returned to found his see; he died in 605, and is known as the Apostle of England
