Your Nervous System Was Made for Peace (Trending with Timmerie)

Modern life often keeps us overstimulated, anxious, and glued to our screens. But what if one of the best ways to calm your mind is just stepping outside?

On Trending with Timmerie, neuroscientist Tj Power explains that serotonin, a key chemical linked to peace and emotional well-being, is largely produced in the gut and influenced by the health of our nervous system. Rather than constantly masking stress with our phones or other distractions, he encourages us to pay attention to what our bodies are telling us.

One of the simplest ways to support a healthy nervous system is spending time in nature. Research on Japan’s practice of “forest bathing” has shown that unhurried time outdoors can help restore calm and reduce the effects of chronic stress. Power recommends setting aside about 30 minutes, several times a week, to walk, garden, or simply be present in a natural setting without a phone.

For Catholics, nature can also become a place of prayer. Whether it’s thanking God for His creation, praying quietly, or simply resting in His presence, these moments can help us slow down and listen more attentively to His voice.

As Timmerie notes, we were created to live in relationship with both God and His creation. By stepping away from constant stimulation and embracing moments of quiet, we allow our minds, bodies, and souls to find the peace they were made for.
