Rome correspondent Ashley Noronha joined The Mark Swartzberg Show to offer listeners an inside look at Pope Leo XIV’s ministry and the enduring role of the papacy in the life of the Church.

Reflecting on years spent covering papal audiences in St. Peter’s Square, Ashley explained that Catholics from every corner of the world gather not because of a pope’s personality, but because of what the office represents. Regardless of who occupies the Chair of St. Peter, the faithful come to pray with the Holy Father and to express the unity of the universal Church. She noted that this same sense of unity is especially evident during a papal transition, when Catholics mourn the loss of one spiritual father before joyfully welcoming another.

Ashley also pointed to the consistency found in papal teaching across generations. While every pope has a distinct style, each calls the faithful back to the timeless truths of the Catholic faith. She highlighted Pope Leo XIV’s recent emphasis on making the Eucharist the center of Christian life and on inviting the Holy Spirit to strengthen believers in their daily witness. Rather than presenting new ideas, the Holy Father’s catechesis reminds Catholics of the truths that have always guided the Church.

The conversation also explored what Pope Leo XIV’s American background brings to his ministry. Ashley noted that his formation in the United States, combined with decades of missionary service in Peru and his work in Rome, has given him a broad international perspective. His experience across multiple cultures reflects the universality of the Church while equipping him to communicate clearly with people throughout the world.

Looking ahead, Ashley previewed the Pope’s summer schedule. Although the weekly Wednesday General Audiences pause during July, Pope Leo will continue leading the Sunday Angelus and carrying out pastoral visits. His time at Castel Gandolfo will provide an opportunity for prayer, writing, and meetings while maintaining a lighter public schedule than usual.

Ashley also highlighted the significance of Pope Leo’s planned visit to Lampedusa, the Italian island that has become a symbol of the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean. She explained that the visit is expected to reinforce the Church’s commitment to defending human dignity and encouraging prayer for those seeking safety and refuge.

While papal personalities and circumstances may differ, the mission of the Church remains constant. Through every pontificate, the Holy Father’s goals remain the same: strengthen and guide the faithful, proclaim the Gospel, and serve as a visible sign of the unity of the Catholic Church.
