Pope Leo XIV reflected on the miracle of the loaves and fishes during his Angelus address on Sunday, reminding the faithful that Jesus satisfies not only physical hunger but the deepest needs of the human heart.

Drawing from St. Matthew’s Gospel, the Holy Father pointed to Christ’s compassion as He fed more than 5,000 people with five loaves and two fish. The miracle, he explained, was more than an extraordinary act of generosity. It revealed that the Kingdom of God is present in Christ, who comes to nourish His people with truth, life, and salvation.

The Pope said every encounter with Jesus is a nourishing experience. Just as the crowd received more than enough to eat, with twelve baskets of leftovers remaining, Christ continues to provide abundantly for those who turn to Him. The miracle reminds Christians that the Lord never fails to care for His people and that He alone can satisfy humanity’s deepest hunger.

Pope Leo also warned against the spiritual danger of greed. He noted that the pursuit of wealth and the habit of wasting resources can dull the heart, making people indifferent to those who suffer from hunger and poverty. Instead, he encouraged the faithful to imitate Christ’s generosity, especially in a world wounded by war, division, and human pride.

The Holy Father connected the miracle of the loaves to the Eucharist, where Jesus offers His very life for the salvation of the world. He encouraged Catholics to let the grace of the Eucharist shape their daily lives through simple acts of charity, including giving thanks before meals, sharing generously with others, and caring for neighbors in need.

Concluding his reflection, Pope Leo entrusted the faithful to the Blessed Virgin Mary, asking her to help Christians grow in charity so that no one may be without their daily bread.
