Can You Help a Loved One Get to Heaven? (Trending with Timmerie)

What if your daily prayers, sacrifices, and time spent with Jesus could help a loved one who has passed away? On Trending with Timmerie, Timmerie speaks with Dr. Phillip Chavez, founder of The Men’s Academy, about the powerful gift of plenary indulgences and how they can transform our spiritual lives.

Dr. Chavez explains that an indulgence remits the temporal punishment remaining after sins have been forgiven. A plenary indulgence removes all such punishment and can be offered for a soul in purgatory.

For Dr. Chavez, this practice has become a daily mission. He imagines helping a suffering soul reach Heaven, motivating him to attend Mass, spend time in Adoration, and grow closer to Christ.

But how can Catholics obtain a plenary indulgence?

Dr. Chavez outlines the Church’s requirements for receiving a plenary indulgence. These include sacramental confession, reception of Holy Communion, prayer for the pope’s intentions, and complete detachment from all sin, including venial sin.

Catholics must also perform an indulgenced work. This can include spending 30 minutes in Eucharistic Adoration, reading Sacred Scripture for 30 minutes, praying the Stations of the Cross, or praying the Rosary under the prescribed conditions.

Timmerie shares how his devotion became deeply personal after the deaths of her grandparents. After their passing, Dr. Chavez offered indulgences for them, leaving Timmerie’s family profoundly touched. One of her aunts, who had lost her son tragically, wanted to know how she could do the same.

Beyond helping the faithful departed, Dr. Chavez believes this practice transforms everyday suffering into an opportunity for holiness.

“Make everything you do a sacrifice,” he says, recalling Our Lady’s message at Fatima.

Whether facing inconvenience, sorrow, or ordinary frustrations, Catholics can unite their sacrifices to Christ’s perfect sacrifice and offer them for others.
