Pope Leo Encourages Dialogue on AI for the Common Good

Pope Leo XIV is encouraging continued dialogue about artificial intelligence, emphasizing that the Church wants to work alongside scientists, policymakers, educators, and others to ensure this rapidly developing technology serves the dignity of every human person.

In a message sent to participants at the United Nations’ AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva, the Holy Father explained that his recent encyclical, Magnifica humanitas, grew out of conversations with people across many fields who are directly involved in the development and use of artificial intelligence. The message, signed on the Pope’s behalf by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State, was released on July 8.

The summit, held from July 7 to 10, brings together international leaders, researchers, and technology experts to examine how artificial intelligence can help address global challenges while also considering its broader impact on society.

The Pope’s message noted that Magnifica humanitas reflects careful listening to scientists and engineers working to improve lives through technology, public officials seeking just policies, and parents and teachers concerned about the future facing younger generations. By engaging these voices, the Holy Father hopes to foster meaningful cooperation that promotes authentic human flourishing.

At the same time, Pope Leo acknowledged that the encyclical was also shaped by growing concerns surrounding artificial intelligence. He pointed to the misuse of algorithms and the increasing loss of human decision-making in important areas of life as serious issues that deserve careful attention.

Rather than rejecting technological progress, the Pope called for ongoing dialogue rooted in the pursuit of the common good. He reaffirmed the Holy See’s willingness to participate in conversations at what he described as a pivotal moment in human history, seeking solutions that protect human dignity while encouraging responsible innovation.

The message concluded with Pope Leo’s assurance of his prayers for everyone participating in the summit. As nations and industries continue to develop increasingly powerful AI systems, the Holy Father encouraged all involved to remain committed to using these technologies in ways that truly serve humanity and uphold the dignity of every person.
