It’s a great time to be a Catholic, says Patrick Madrid

Have you been discouraged by the way things are going in the country? No matter who you voted for or what political views you hold, I think the majority of us would agree that our nation has become more polarized, divided, and secular. Politics have become more about arguing than compromising and many people have begun to think of those who disagree with them as “enemies”.

If discouraged or dismayed accurately describes you, Patrick Madrid has some words to share:

“A lot of people—maybe this describes you, maybe it describes people around you whom you love and care about—are feeling very afraid and very depressed. My word of advice to you is don’t feel that way. Now I know you can’t control your emotions and like the weather they come and go.

“Here’s what I’m saying: don’t forget that God wants you to be alive right now for a reason. God wants you here right now and that means that He has some role for you to play—whatever that may be; it could be a hidden role, it could be something more overt. But don’t allow yourself to succumb to depression and anger and resentment and fear and discouragement. Jesus said, ‘In the world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer for I have overcome the world.’

“This is not a time for you to be discouraged! This is a great time to be a Catholic; it’s a great time to be a follower of Jesus. And if you allow yourself to wallow in discouragement or fear or any of those things, you’re going to miss out on what it is that God wants from you and for you during this time. So make an effort to shake that off; don’t wallow in it; move forward.”

Think about it—every saint had different trials and obstacles to overcome. God placed them in that time and place in history to make a difference right there. God has also placed you in this time and place to play a role in your particular set of circumstances. Don’t let anger or fear cloud your ability to see what God is asking of you today. Open your heart and allow yourself to work for good as a part of His divine plan.
