“Should I Date a Protestant?” (The Patrick Madrid Show)

It’s a common question. Can a Catholic and a Protestant have a successful marriage together? If you’re dating, how do you know if you should stay in the relationship? If you feel uncertain, you might be enlightened by this conversation!

In this episode of The Patrick Madrid Show, a listener named Chiara from Los Angeles seeks advice on bridging the religious gap with her Protestant boyfriend. Chiara is a devout Catholic, while her boyfriend is a committed non-denominational Christian. Patrick Madrid asks Chiara about the level of her boyfriend’s commitment to his evangelical beliefs and emphasizes the fundamental differences in their faith, such as sola scriptura (Bible-only belief) and “once saved, always saved” doctrine.

Patrick advises Chiara to carefully consider the relationship, pointing out the potential challenges they might face, especially concerning their future children’s religious upbringing. He suggests Chiara and her boyfriend read a book called “Surprised by Truth,” which contains stories of former Evangelical Protestants converting to Catholicism. Patrick believes this activity could help them explore the differences in their faith and assess the viability of their relationship.

Although Chiara may find Patrick’s advice challenging and “hard to swallow,” he encourages her to consider the long-term implications and emphasizes the importance of unity in faith for a successful relationship.
